“Iran’s Missile Test” a Lesson in Political Acumen

Two things are of utmost importance when playing international politics: timing and media manipulation. Crazy old Iran proves adept at both.

The semi-official Fars News Agency released this picture of a missile test that went down on Sunday — that’s two days after the government fessed up to enriching uranium and one week before Iranian officials meet with U.S. representatives to discuss the nation’s nuclear program. How serendipitous.

Iran, of course, say the plans are peaceful, but the rest of the world thinks they’re fibbing. And Revolutionary Guard leader Gen. Hossein Salami’s missile-related statement doesn’t help matters: he insists Iran will “respond to any military action in a crushing manner.” Yow.

But, no matter, because Iran got what it wanted: a bargain chip for next week’s meeting and a guaranteed spot on the morning news cycle. Well played, but this won’t likely endear you to people like Hillary Clinton. The Secretary of State said she and her crew will give Iran a chance to defend their “peaceful” claims, but she’s not holding her breath. “We don’t believe that they can present convincing evidence,” she said on CBS’ Face the Nation. And, really, can one blame her skepticism?

Does Mayor Eric Brewer get your vote?

mayor__oPt

East-Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer is in the midst of a reelection campaign where it will be decided next Tuesday whether or not he stays in office. That’s why the picture posted above is so damaging, and that’s also why Mayor Eric Brewer thinks something foul is afoot.
The pictures, when compared side-by-side with other pictures of Mayor Eric Brewer, appear to show Brewer wearing high-heels, lingerie and a wig in overtly sexual poses. It’s not illegal, but it’s definitely not the kind of thing you want coming out right before an election. That’s why Brewer thinks the photos were leaked by a political enemy who wants to see him lose the upcoming election.

Brewer issued a statement and spoke to local NBC affiliate WKYC. “While I am not and will not authenticate any of the pictures, since it appears as if they and the e-mails my opponent has caused to distributed are personal in nature, the fact is they are embarrassing to our city,” Brewer said.

On one hand, I have to think it’s a good idea for someone in politics to avoid posing for sexually-charged photos while dressed in lingerie. Especially if that politician is a man. But on the other hand, I really do hope that this doesn’t affect the way East Cleveland residents vote on Tuesday. If Brewer is doing a good job being mayor (and I’m definitely not the person to judge that), then he deserves a fair shot. Even if he likes slipping into something more, uh, comfortable from time to time.

Obama brings big numbers to Late Night TV

LETTERMAN7.2 million people tuned in to watch Obama’s chit-chat with David Letterman last night, Letterman’s biggest night in four years.

Craig Ferguson saw a boost. His show, which comes right after Letterman’s, brought in 3.24 million viewers, giving him his biggest night ever.

The only loser? Conan O’Brien, who had his second worst night since taking over the Tonight Show: 2.24 million.

“I was black before the election”

Who’s Nailin Sarah Pailin? You!

Over the past year, we’ve seen “Sarah Palin” get boned by the Russians, Obama, David Letterman—and now, finally, even the common working man will get the chance to have his way with the Alaskan Princess.

Yes, Hustler is on the verge of releasing their interactive Palinpalooza, “You’re Nailin’ Palin!” Not only do you get to see Lisa “Sarah Palin” Ann getting done POV-style…you also get the chance to control the action, and see it all unfold whichever way you like best. Also, Alexis Texas joins the fun as Miss California—a detail that probably would have been a lot more interesting had this come out, say, three or four months ago, back when we actually still (sorta) cared about Miss Carrie Prejean.
