Teen diagnoses her own disease in science class

For eight years, Jessica Terry suffered from stomach pain so horrible, it brought her to her knees. The pain, along with diarrhea, vomiting and fever, made her so sick, she lost weight and often had to miss school. Her doctors, no matter how hard they tried, couldn’t figure out the cause of Jessica’s abdominal distress. Then one day in January, Terry, 18, figured it out on her own. In her Advanced Placement high school science class, she was looking under the microscope at slides of her own intestinal tissue — slides her pathologist had said were completely normal — and spotted an area of inflamed tissue called a granuloma, a clear indication that she had Crohn’s disease. She was pretty excited about finding the granuloma,” Welch said. “She said, ‘Ms. Welch! Ms. Welch! Come over here. I think I’ve got something!’ ” Welch, who has taught the Biomedical Problems class at Eastside for 17 years, immediately went on the Internet to see whether Terry had indeed spotted a granuloma. “I said, ‘Jeez, it certainly looks like one to me,’ ” Welch remembered. “I snapped a picture of it on the microscope and e-mailed it to the pathologist. Within 24 hours, he sent back an e-mail saying yes, this is a granuloma. - CNN.com

Americans’ net worth shrinks $1.33 trillion in 1Q

WASHINGTON – American households lost $1.33 trillion of their wealth in the first three months of the year as the recession took a bite out of stock portfolios and dragged down home prices. The Federal Reserve reported Thursday that household net worth fell to $50.38 trillion in the January-March quarter, the lowest level since the third quarter of 2004. The first-quarter figure marked a decline of 2.6 percent, or $1.33 trillion, from the final quarter of 2008. Net worth represents total assets such as homes and checking accounts, minus liabilities like mortgages and credit card debt. The damage to wealth in the first quarter came from the sinking stock market. The value of Americans’ stock holdings dropped 5.8 percent from the final quarter of last year. With wealth declining and unemployment rising, there are questions about how consumers — the lifeblood of the economy — will behave in the coming months. If they continue to spend, even at a subdued pace, the recession likely will end this year as predicted by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and other economists. However, if consumers hunker down and cut spending again, that could delay any recovery. In the final quarter of last year, Americans slashed spending at an annualized rate of 4.3 percent, the most in 28 years.

And her heart won’t go on: Last Titanic survivor dies

Oh why did I throw that necklace overboard?! It could've paid for my health insurance!

(CNN) — Millvina Dean, believed to be the last survivor of the Titanic, has died at 97, her friends confirmed Sunday. Dean was just an infant when the RMS Titanic — publicized as “practically unsinkable” and the largest passenger steamship at the time — struck an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912, during its maiden voyage from Southampton in southern England to New York. The ship sank less than three hours later, killing more than 1,500 people.

Brian Ticehurst, a friend of Dean, said she died at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Dean was hospitalized a few days ago for medical complications before returning to the Woodlands Ridge Nursing Home in Southampton, said Charles Haas, a friend and president of the Titanic International Society based in New Jersey.

Foregone conclusion: Octomom gets reality show

LOS ANGELES – The Southern California woman who gave birth to the world’s longest-surviving set of octuplets has signed a deal to star in a reality television series, her lawyer said Sunday.

Nadya Suleman, who gave birth to the six boys and two girls in January and also has six other children, agreed to be filmed for a proposed television show by 3Ball Productions, attorney Jeff Czech said. The company, which is a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based Eyeworks International, hasn’t yet sold the show to any American television network, he said.
The show will be modeled after a successful Eyeworks TV series in Denmark that documents the lives of four children from the day they were born until they become adults.
“They came up with this idea, presented to her and she liked it because she’ll get to use a camera and do some of the filming herself,” Czech told The Associated Press.

He said film crews will not follow Suleman and her children 24 hours a day, but will document certain milestones such as birthdays and special events.
“It’ll be less intrusive than a reality TV type of program,” Czech said.

At the end of the day this is all about those little helpless babies. Let’s hope we are all bored enough or dumb enough to watch this show so these kids won’t end up in the foster care system.–BEREZ
