The list of governors threatening to decline federal stimulus money last month read like a list of Republicans considering running for president in 2012: Governors Mark Sanford, Bobby Jindal and Sarah Palin led the anti-stimulus charge.

But what began with a bang is ending with something closer to a whimper. All three of those governors have been forced to scale back their expectations, to varying degree, as the push of conservative philosophy gave way to the pull of political reality.

I guess these governors managed to consult their one advisor with the triple digit I.Q. who informed them just how tough it was going to be to win the White House right on the heels of getting evicted from their Governors’ mansions. And when part of that stimulus was to go to the extension of unemployment benefits it must have also occurred to them that unemployed people vote too. I mean what the hell else do they have to do?! They’re unemployed! Governor Sanford’s feckless rationale, which he trumpeted in a T.V. ad, argues that he was sparing his state’s children from future debt. But when the cost of a future free of debt is a present full of misery and hunger… Uhhhh… Yeah. Go GOP, Go! Away.-BEREZ
